PetalMC V1.5 - Into the Abyss

V1.5 is our largest world and systems update yet. It opens the Abyss, expands the arena and expedition experience, introduces new progression paths and quests, and strengthens the systems that protect PetalMCโ€™s players and economy.

The Abyss

The Expeditionersโ€™ Guild has opened the descent.

The Abyss is a finite, permanently dark dimension built around vertical exploration. A drowned surface sits above eleven increasingly dangerous strata, each with its own terrain, landmarks, inhabitants, resources and atmosphere. Entry requires level 30 and completion of the Abyss Guideโ€™s briefing and examination.

The new layers are:

  • The Sulfur Sea - a poisoned surface ocean dotted with low islands, sulfur formations and buried ruins. The surface itself has no hostile spawn roster.
  • The Shallows - a peaceful introduction featuring wider galleries, waterfalls, abandoned retreats and the lantern-lit meadows and pools of the Lantern Gardens.
  • The Verdant Deep - floating cherry orchards, glowing Blossom Caverns and rivers cutting through the rock.
  • The Great Hollow - Amethyst Peaks, the Coiled Expanse, lost cities, ancient masonry, vault rooms and valuable obsidian nodules.
  • The Blooming Wilds - dense forest caves, Bloom Hollows, giant fungi, mires and the rare, lantern-lined Cherry Paradise.
  • The Sunless Sea - a submerged threshold of reefs, obsidian skies, rock spires and scarce air pockets.
  • The Elder Depths - four distinct Elder Vault designs and ancient Sounding Posts, strongrooms and instrument cellars.
  • The Bleeding Earth - ash shores and lava seas in the Ember Reach, crossed by obsidian ribbons and overlooked by the Anvil caldera. The three-storey Cinder Hold offers forges, halls and deep loot.
  • The Inverted World - larger Upturned islands with roads and hanging huts, inverted fungal chambers and the point-down Inverted Temple.
  • The Pale Expanse - bone fields, graves, ruined arches, the monumental Pale Cathedral and a Hanging Pale Forest of root-linked islands and frozen water.
  • The Abyssal Verge - the domain of Leviathans and newly added Mourning Groves, where black idols, sculk hazards and offering chambers wait.
  • The Root - a vast, open void crossed by sparse tendrils, chains and lanterns. Its rare hanging Root Trees contain the deepest destination and reward in the world.

Survival in the descent

  • Hostile creatures use a dedicated roster for each stratum. Health, damage, rewards and reactive mining encounters scale as players descend.
  • From the Elder Depths onward, enemies gain a growing deep bite that remains dangerous through high-level armour.
  • Darkness is now a survival mechanic. Sanity falls more quickly at greater depths, causing minor and eventually major abyss sickness unless players return to effective light.
  • The Sulfur Sea and Shallows are sickness-safe. Light also suppresses hostile spawning through the upper layers, but no longer prevents spawns from the Sunless Sea downward.
  • Abyss homes may be anchored from the surface through the Sunless Sea, but only in well-lit locations. Recalling from another dimension costs 250 gold.
  • /spawn uses a short, interruptible recall while in the Abyss. Recent damage prevents recall, and active pursuit blocks every ordinary escape route.
  • Death now preserves the hotbar, armour and offhand. The remainder of the inventory drops at the death location.
  • The Abyss has been given a finite border and a deterministic generation system so landmarks, ore and decoration remain stable across chunk borders.

Abyss resources and progression

The Abyss introduces its own mining progression alongside depth-gated vanilla ores.

  • Marmorite and Vulcanite appear in the upper and lower Shallows and can be mined with any pickaxe.
  • Refined Marmorite or Vulcanite picks open the rare Aurite, Porphyrite and Thalassite seams found from the Verdant Deep through the Blooming Wilds. Echo and Abyssal pickaxes can also open these seams.
  • Aetherite now generates naturally from the Elder Depths through the Abyssal Verge. It remains exclusive to the Vulcanite pickaxe.
  • The Root contains rare pockets of diamond, ancient debris, emerald and multiple Ginko minerals.
  • Every conventional zone now contains local ore, and deep ruins use new Abyss-specific rare and epic chest tables rather than unrelated expedition or Aether rewards.
  • Marmorite and Vulcanite values have been rebalanced to reflect their actual abundance.

New craftable mineral weapons include:

  • Marmorite Sword - 35% chance to slow its target.
  • Vulcanite Sword - 30% chance to ignite its target.
  • Aurite Sword - 25% chance to steal one heart.
  • Porphyrite Sword - 30% chance to inflict Wither.
  • Thalassite Sword - 30% chance to inflict Weakness.
  • Laurionite Sword - 30% chance to snowblind its target.
  • Aetherite Sword - 20% chance to lift its target from the ground.

The new mythical Abyssal set can be found only in the deeper descent. It includes the Abyssal Helm, Cuirass, Greaves, Sabatons, Blade, Axe and Pickaxe, with high durability and effects built for sustained exploration.

Abyssal fragments and the Accord

Twenty new lore relics can be recovered from deep ruins and creatures:

  • Six common scraps can be sold through ordinary buyers.
  • Six bound scrolls and four sealed rites can be read and purchased only by Corwin Ashe, the Expedition Scholar. Each has its own lore reading and pays between 340 and 1,800 gold depending on its grade.
  • Four broken rites are forbidden contraband. They cannot be sold, remain detectable inside bundles and shulker boxes, and build Accord pressure while carried in the Abyss.

Discovering a fragment now triggers a dedicated visual and audio cue. Carrying a broken rite triggers a clear contraband warning. Ignore that warning for long enough and the existing Accord escalation system will issue two warnings before sending an Accord Enforcer. Dropping the relic or escaping the Abyss allows the pressure to decay.

New decorative blocks and props

V1.5 adds 88 placeable custom decorations, all with dedicated models and textures:

  • 13 bushes, including small, tiered, flowering and cherry variants.
  • 50 vine pieces, including wall ivy, roof growth, hanging tree vines, flowering colours and modular patches.
  • 10 bone, skull, grave and gravestone props.
  • 15 ancient-ruin pieces, including arches, columns, broken and mossy masonry, benches and rubble.

These decorations also appear naturally throughout the Abyss. They can be placed, rotated and recovered as proper custom props rather than being purely visual world-generation details.

Music and sound

  • Added five general Abyss tracks, two peaceful tracks and two pursuit tracks.
  • Added exclusive music for The Pale Expanse and The Root.
  • Added a new Abyss portal theme to the Abyssal Research Unit.
  • Added depth- and location-aware ambience for waterfalls, Amethyst Peaks, the Sunless Sea above and below the waterline, the Elder Depths, Bleeding Earth, Pale Expanse, Abyssal Verge and Root.
  • Added descent, sickness, distant-event, Accord-response, fragment-discovery and contraband-warning sound cues.
  • Music now responds to safety and light. Peaceful music requires a genuinely lit refuge rather than a momentary torch, while pursuit music takes priority during an Accord chase.

Arena update

  • Trials now support one, two or three players. Three-player groups spawn in separate positions along the centre line.
  • To preserve the risk of bringing a larger group, all three players take double damage from every source during a three-player trial. This is communicated on entry and still respects normal armour, shields and combat mitigation.
  • Added 15 arena environments: Aquatic, Arcade, Desert, Farmland, Forest, Graveyard, Lost Ruins, Magic, Mesa, Mine, Moai, Mushroom, Mythic, Snow and Tropical Ruins.
  • Arena Trials now progress through increasingly large and powerful waves. Minor champions appear at phases 5 and 15, while major champions appear at phases 10 and 20.
  • Added arena bosses with unique appearances, music and room-changing attacks, including the Aetherial Warlord, Grand Pyromancer, Slime King, Ice Slime and Magma Slime.
  • Boss mechanics now include changing floors, Clockstop, Icedrop, summoned sentries, Glowburst, ambushes and siege attacks. Arena geometry is restored cleanly after each fight.
  • Parties choose from Vigor, Bulwark, Fleetfoot and Mender buffs during the countdown.
  • Trials detect stalled waves and deploy Timeless Saboteurs so inaccessible or hidden enemies cannot deadlock a run.
  • Duels remain a two-player mode with a five-minute limit and a damage-ledger verdict.
  • Added Talos, Herald of the Arena, to track Arena progress and rewards.

Arena rewards and quests

  • Added Tokens of Tyrannos, earned through the new Arena quest chain.
  • Tokens can be exchanged for the new Emerald armour set and Emerald Edge. The set provides additional health and well-fed bonuses; the boots also grant movement speed.
  • Added four Talos quests:
    • Five Phases Standing - clear five phases.
    • Lesser Crowns - defeat two minor champions.
    • Crownbreaker - defeat a major champion.
    • The Long Stand - a repeatable daily challenge to clear 15 phases.

New quests and characters

The quest system now supports kill, mining, collection, expedition-survival, conversation, discovery and arena objectives, including repeatable quests and multi-part chains.

New adventures include:

  • Repeatable work from the Quartermaster, Florist, Old Marl and Aether Scholar: Thinning the Dead, The Dayโ€™s Posy, Ten Minutes of Nerve and A Sound From Below.
  • The four-part Nathaniel chain: When Does It Open?, Certain Accounting Formalities, Forty-One Invoices and The Man Himself.
  • Lenaโ€™s four-part cake chain: A Quiet Favour, Rather A Lot Of Wheat, Three Buckets and Would You Take It?, including Lenaโ€™s Lucky Apron.
  • Bramโ€™s Ruins expedition quest, The Consignment, begun by discovering the right quest gemstone and completed with a collection of ruins antiquities.
  • Cass and Ferraโ€™s Aether chain: A Small Errand, He Says, Where the Winds Howl No More, The Isles Above the Rest and Ten Points of Proof.
  • The four new Talos Arena quests listed above.
  • Corwin Ashe has been added to the Abyssal Research Unit with a full dialogue tree, fragment hand-ins and new lore surrounding the Abyssal Accord.

Expedition updates

  • Added the Peaceful expedition temperament and its exclusive Paradise and Ruins destinations.
  • Paradise expeditions now generate Forest, Jungle and Blossom islands around a huge procedural, hollow and climbable world tree. Islands contain ponds, paths, lamps, wildlife, supply caches, buildings and rare wonders.
  • Ruins expeditions now contain several raised settlements with churches, halls, houses, caches, unique regalia, gemstones and quest stones.
  • Both peaceful island types now contain winding cave networks and buried dungeon chambers.
  • Expedition terrain selection now scales with the partyโ€™s average level. Wilderness is more common for new groups; Dungeons and stranger destinations become more likely as a party grows experienced.
  • Added and rebalanced Field Guides for Wilderness, Wasteland, Dungeon, Peaceful, Calm, Chaotic and Erratic outcomes.
  • Improved Dungeon floor connections, key-room flow, boss placement and room scaling. Bosses now use the actual arena ceiling and floor they receive.
  • Improved expedition generation and launch reliability with safer landing selection, bounded preparation work, clearer progress reporting and faster cleanup of expired worlds.
  • Paradise and Ruins generation has been rebalanced for denser points of interest, more reliable chest rewards and less empty travel.
  • Structured expedition entry and exit are now recorded for staff review so legitimate high-density combat is not mistaken for farm activity.

Dynamic economy and anti-farm protections

Vendor demand now responds to supply. This creates a hard limit on how much gold can be minted by repeatedly dumping the same item, even when an unknown farm design slips past production detection.

  • Vendors and the Appraiser now share daily demand counters for each material and custom item.
  • Payouts are adjusted using both the sellerโ€™s daily volume and the total server-wide volume. Normal quantities continue to receive normal value; sustained oversupply progressively lowers the price.
  • Item lore always displays the actual payout. A low-demand line appears when saturation has reduced the offer, and heavily reduced sales trigger a chat warning.
  • Demand resets each calendar day and persists through restarts.
  • Natural bulk materials such as logs receive a relaxed allowance so ordinary woodcutting is not treated like high-output crop dumping.
  • The system is shared by vendors and the Appraiser, preventing players from bypassing demand by moving between buyers.

Production-side protections have also been expanded:

  • New farm monitoring covers high-volume crops, pistons, hoppers, bone-meal dispensers, automatic block breaking, cobblestone and basalt generators, and AFK or note-block fishing.
  • Detected hotspots reduce item yield and can void fishing rewards, including treasure and XP. Repeated activity can also suppress growth, piston movement and new casts.
  • AFK presence near an active hotspot applies a further penalty, while staff alerts identify nearby players and recent automation builders for review.
  • Portal-gold, iron-golem, raid, pillager and other high-volume mob farms now receive additional spawn and reward controls.
  • These systems throttle production and preserve evidence; they do not automatically delete builds or declare a player guilty.

Sentinel system update

Sentinel has been rebuilt as PetalMCโ€™s server-side integrity and abuse-prevention system.

  • Added a versioned, three-screen rules acknowledgement on first join covering unfair client advantages, economic exploitation, Abyss visibility rules, pathfinding abuse, collected gameplay metadata and the review process.
  • Added native checks for impossible fast breaking, excessive reach, obstructed interaction, rapid multi-target attacks, extreme movement and sustained hovering. Checks use server-authoritative state, include lag and gameplay exemptions, and suspend when server performance falls below the safe threshold.
  • Added audit-only rare-vein analysis to provide supporting evidence for suspicious mining without treating luck, cave exposure or shared coordinates as proof.
  • Confirmed enforcement now cancels the action, warns the affected player, plays a private Sentinel cue and waits briefly before disconnecting them.
  • Each enforced detection records a tamper-checked snapshot of the surrounding area, nearby containers, player inventory and the preceding 30 seconds of gameplay activity. Chat is never included.
  • Staff can reconstruct snapshots in a private, read-only review world. Each session is isolated and erased when review ends.
  • Added Green, Yellow and Red seven-day Sentinel standings, visible with /sentinel status. Red-standing accounts cannot make direct gold transfers or use party invitations until reviewed or forgiven.
  • Sentinel does not automatically issue permanent bans. Evidence is reviewed by staff, and proximity to a suspected farm is not itself a violation.
  • Added a coalesced 48-hour activity history for staff review, with structured context for quests, vendors, trials, duels and expeditions. This helps distinguish ordinary play from safe spots, grinders and liquidation loops.
  • FarmGuard interventions can now freeze nearby mobs briefly, quarantine the affected 3ร—3-chunk area and preserve an evidence snapshot without automatically kicking nearby players.

Use /sentinel for the public overview and /sentinel status to view your current standing.

Additional fixes and polish

  • Fixed empty or overwritten containers in generated Abyss structures.
  • Fixed rare ore thresholds and added world-probe tooling to validate actual ore frequency before balancing values.
  • Improved zone boundaries and removed vertical wall artefacts at the edges of authored Abyss regions.
  • Corrected zone-specific ore starvation where custom terrain bypassed the general ore pass.
  • Improved generation consistency across chunk seams for roads, huts, trees, forests, ruins and ore clusters.
  • Fixed gravestones and other custom decorations so their placement and recovery behave consistently.
  • Expanded operator diagnostics for locating Abyss landmarks, monitoring generation and reviewing economy or farm activity.

Welcome to V1.5. Bring light, pack carefully, and remember: the descent always gets worse.
