How prices work
One number decides what everything is worth, and one ratio decides what a vendor will pay you for it. Everything else on this page is an exception, and there are not many.
The value tree
Every tradeable thing has a single canonical value in gold: the price you pay a vendor for one of it. There is no per-vendor price list - a shelf just names an item and a bundle size, and the price falls out of the tree. That is why the Goldsmith and the General Store never disagree about what a gold nugget is worth.
2,166 of the 2,415 items on this wiki carry a value. The rest are things nobody trades over a counter.
The spread
A vendor pays a quarter of what it charges. That gap is the whole reason a counter is not a money printer: you cannot buy a stack at the shop and sell it back at a profit, and you never will be able to.
| Direction | What you get | Rounding |
|---|---|---|
| You buy from a vendor | value x amount | Rounded up |
| A vendor buys from you | value x amount รท 4 | Rounded down, never below 1 |
Worked through
Item Value A stack costs A stack sells for
Dirt 1 64 16
Oak Log 4 256 128
Diamond 64 4,096 1,024
Netherite Ingot 1,600 102,400 25,600
Where the spread softens
A handful of goods pay half instead of a quarter. These
are the things you gather by the stack rather than find: a quarter of four
gold a log is one gold, which is what an hour with an axe was worth, and
why nobody used to carry logs to a counter. Nothing here changes what you
pay - only what you are paid.
Shelves that ignore the tree
A vendor can be given a fixed price when the difference is the
point and must not drift as values move around it. There are
76 of them, and they are all marked
fixed wherever
they appear on this wiki.
Selling a mountain pays less
Dump the same material hard in a single day and vendor and Appraiser buy
prices soften on it for the rest of the day. Casual selling never notices;
an industrial cash-out very much does. This sits on top of everything
above - it is the last line of defence for the economy if a farm slips
past the production guards.
Player shops sit inside these bounds
A player shop can charge anything
above what a vendor would pay for the same goods and below four times the
item's value. Under the floor a shop would just be a machine for turning
goods into vendor gold; the ceiling keeps a monopoly honest.
