The Aether โ˜๏ธ

The icy podium. Level 15 required.

Islands adrift in an endless sky - and beneath everything, the void. The Aether is beautiful, generous, and it does not forgive.

The rules of the sky

  • Level 15 to enter. The podium refuses the unproven.
  • The sky bites. Every monster up here hits harder than it should - and harder still after dark. Armor that feels safe below feels thinner in the Aether.
  • Death takes everything. Your inventory is lost when you die - to a monster, to the Hunter, or to the long fall. Pack light, carry only what youโ€™re willing to feed the void.
  • /spawn always works - the skyโ€™s one mercy.
  • The Aether Landing where you arrive is a protected sanctuary; no harm reaches you within it. Beyond its edge, youโ€™re in the Aether Wilderness, and the rules above apply.

The layers of the world

From the roof of the sky to the bottom:

  • The celestial isles (very high) - serene cherry-crowned gardens far above everything, in perfect silence. Hard to reach, harder to leave.
  • The garden layer - the main islands: terraced cliffs, mountains, caves through the island cores, lakes with sandy coral shores that sometimes spill off island edges as waterfalls. Three biome bands sweep the sky - pink cherry groves, green meadows, and the ashen, eye-flowered pale garden.
  • The drifting shelf - smaller islands hanging below the gardens.
  • The scorched deeps (low) - bare stone and sand, cacti, lava pools glowing against the void. The wind itself refuses to follow you down.

What the sky offers

  • Echo Crystal - glowing pink ore found only here, in island cores and cave walls. Mine it (pickaxe required) and craft echo tools: faster than diamond, prettier than everything.
  • A warning about diamonds: the sky lies. Most diamond ore up here yields Foolโ€™s Diamond - it sparkles convincingly, stacks apart from the real thing, and no smith, crafting bench or smithing table will touch it. The appraiser pays a token out of pity. Real aether diamonds exist; theyโ€™re just the exception.
  • Relics - ancient oddities that tumble out of Aether stone as you dig. The Relic Appraiser at the guild pays well; the rarer, the richer.
  • Full guide to both: Echo Crystals & Relics.
  • Monument chests - ruins, temples, and tower vaults hold real treasure: diamonds, golden apples, echo crystal, iron arms and armor - and, often enough to matter, relics. Every vault carries at least one usable piece of gear.
  • The spire towers - jewelled andesite-and-purpur complexes rising up to 40 blocks, their age written in the copper of their floors. The vault is inside, on a random floor, past the breezes, vindicators and wither skeletons sealed in with it.
  • The strange things - colossal stone serpents coiling between islands, bone spires, skeleton colossi and ancient ruins that grow grander (and stranger) the further you fly from the landing.

The Hunt โ˜

The Aether is peaceful - until it isnโ€™t. Away from the landing, something occasionally takes an interest in you (far more often at night). Youโ€™ll hear it approach long before you see it. Then: thunder, lightning, and the Aether Hunter - a relentless spirit with phantoms in tow. Kill it and it always drops a relic. Flee the world, or die, and the hunt ends the hard way.

  • The sky also grants moments of peace - a minute at a time when music plays and nothing stirs. Breathe.
  • Aether Boots (rare drop, or 4,000g at the guild) halve your odds of being hunted. The Aether Diadem (extremely rare) makes you invisible to the Hunter entirely.
