The Abyss

The Abyss is a finite, perma-night descent dimension reached through the Expeditionersโ€™ Guild. Rather than spreading out like an ordinary Minecraft world, it is structured vertically: a drowned surface lies above eleven distinct strata, each becoming stranger and more dangerous than the last.

The dimension is designed as a long expedition. Players establish footholds in the upper layers, follow caves, ruins and trails downward, and eventually reach the open void of the Root. Depth changes the terrain, creatures, resources, lighting rules and cost of combat.

Getting there

The way down is not one of the portal podiums. It is inside the Abyssal Research Unit, the research centre in Blossom Village on the far side of the fountain from the entrance podium. Walk round the fountain and keep going; you will know you are in the right place when the village birdsong drops away and is replaced by the sound of a cold cave.

Inside is the teleporter pad that drops you onto the Sulfur Sea, and the Abyss Guide, who decides whether you are going anywhere at all.

What the pad wants

Two things, and it wants both:

  1. Level 30.
  2. The Guideโ€™s clearance. Ask the Abyss Guide for the Expeditionerโ€™s Guide, read it, and come back to be examined. Only a clean run of answers signs you down.

Fail either and the pad simply refuses you, with the same flat line every time: โ€œThe guild will not sign you down. Speak to the Abyss Guide.โ€ Nothing is consumed and nothing is broken - you are just not going yet.

Read the book properly. The examination is on its contents, and the questions are about the things that will actually kill you.

On arrival

The surface is a quiet introduction rather than the first combat arena. Hostile spawning does not begin until stratum I, below the Sulfur Sea, so you get a little while to look around and decide how committed you are.

The descent

The listed heights are nominal. Terrain noise can shift a local boundary, so the stratum reported by the server is authoritative near transitions.

LayerNominal Y rangeDescription
0 - The Sulfur Seasurface; sea at 1552A drowned, perma-night surface of sulfur sea, pocket islands and ruins. It has no hostile spawn roster.
I - The Shallows1502โ€“1382Familiar and forgiving upper galleries containing Lantern Gardens, waterfalls and surface ruins.
II - The Verdant Deep1382โ€“1262A beautiful threshold of Blossom Caverns and Verdant Rivers where the darkness first becomes an affliction.
III - The Great Hollow1262โ€“1142A precarious open layer containing Amethyst Peaks, the Coiled Expanse and Lost Cities.
IV - The Blooming Wilds1142โ€“1022A hostile subterranean forest of Bloom Hollows, Cherry Paradise, mires, giant fungi and dense animal life.
V - The Sunless Sea1022โ€“902A fully aquatic layer populated by drowned, guardians and squid. It is the last depth at which a permanent foothold can be anchored.
VI - The Elder Depths902โ€“782Ancient worked stone, Elder Vaults and Sounding Posts patrolled by an old garrison and the guildโ€™s dead.
VII - The Bleeding Earth782โ€“662An unnatural burning layer of lava, Ember Reaches and Cinder Holds inhabited by Nether-derived creatures.
VIII - The Inverted World662โ€“542Reality-breaking inverted terrain, Upturned islands and Inverted Temples.
IX - The Pale Expanse542โ€“422A dead, colourless civilisation of bone fields, cathedrals, hanging pale forests, graves and ruins.
X - The Abyssal Verge422โ€“302The forbidden last ordinary stratum, containing Leviathans, Mourning Groves and the descentโ€™s most dangerous mixed population.
XI - The Root302 to โˆ’64A vast open void crossed by sparse root filaments and flying enemies. It has no floor; the Root Tree is its destination.

Creatures and combat

Vanilla spawning is disabled in the Abyss. AbyssSpawns chooses creatures from a roster belonging to the current stratum and places them near players. Mining stone or ore can also provoke a reactive spawn, with the chance increasing at greater depth.

Vanilla mobs spawned this way have their attributes scaled by the layer:

maximum health = vanilla maximum health ร— roster multiplier ร— health curve
attack damage = vanilla attack damage ร— roster multiplier ร— damage curve
StratumHealthAttack damageAdditional deep bite
0 / I0.70ร—0.70ร—-
II1.15ร—1.50ร—-
III1.40ร—2.00ร—-
IV1.61ร—2.30ร—-
V1.82ร—2.60ร—-
VI2.03ร—2.90ร—+0.7
VII2.24ร—3.20ร—+1.4
VIII2.45ร—3.50ร—+2.1
IX2.66ร—3.80ร—+2.8
X2.87ร—4.10ร—+3.5
XI3.08ร—4.40ร—+4.2

The deep bite begins in stratum VI. It is flat damage added after normal armour mitigation so that deep creatures remain dangerous to well-equipped players. It rises by 0.7 for every further stratum and applies to melee and projectile attacks from tagged Abyss spawns.

Custom creatures loaded from are not given the health or attack curves because their statistics are already hand-authored. They are still tagged with their stratum and therefore receive the deep bite in strata VIโ€“XI.

Abyss-spawned creatures also carry a reward multiplier of 1 + 0.1 ร— stratum, increasing normal kill rewards and drops with depth.

Darkness and light

Light is a survival resource in the Abyss. Once per second the server moves a playerโ€™s sanity toward the effective light level at their position. Sanity starts at 8, recovers in light, falls faster with depth and has a maximum of 16 โˆ’ 0.5 ร— stratum.

The surface and stratum I cannot cause abyss sickness. From stratum II onward, remaining in true darkness can cause minor sickness: all incoming damage except the sicknessโ€™s own custom tick is multiplied by 1.5 and the player gains additional exhaustion. In stratum III and deeper it can worsen into major sickness, which also deals 1 damage every second. Returning to light restores sanity, and leaving the dimension clears the affliction.

Light also affects hostile spawning in the upper descent. In strata Iโ€“II, effective light 4 or greater prevents ambient hostile spawns; in IIIโ€“IV the safe threshold is 3. From the Sunless Sea downward, light no longer prevents spawning, although it still protects against sickness.

Homes and travel

Homes can be set in the Abyss, but only on the surface or in strata Iโ€“V. The anchor point must have an effective light level greater than 8, ensuring it is a deliberately lit foothold rather than a naturally glowing patch.

Using an Abyss home from another dimension costs 250 gold each time. Travelling between two Abyss homes is free. The normal home warm-up, movement check and damage cooldown still apply. Homes cannot be newly anchored below the Sunless Sea.

/spawn is the reliable way out. In the Abyss it has a three-second warm-up, requires the player to remain within 1.5 blocks and is cancelled by damage. It cannot be started if the player took damage during the previous ten seconds.

When the Abyssโ€™s escalation system marks a player as pursued, ordinary teleports are locked completely. /spawn, /home, portal pads, ender pearls, chorus fruit and plugin warps are all refused until the Enforcer is defeated or the player dies.

Death

Death in the Abyss uses partial keep-inventory. Players retain:

  • all nine hotbar slots;
  • worn armour; and
  • the offhand slot.

Everything else in the inventory drops at the death location. Kept equipment is restored to its original slots on respawn, leaving the player able to fight and return for the rest of their pack.

Resources and structures

Every stratum has its own terrain palette, cave character, structures and resource opportunities. Common ores are gated by depth, while custom ores and their required pickaxes form a separate progression through the descent. See The Abyss - ores, depths and picks for the full tables.

Ruins, trails, vaults and other structures provide ordinary loot as well as Abyssal Fragments. Fragments are lore relics connected to the abyssal accord; some can be handed to Corwin for gold, while carrying contraband fragments can add pressure to the escalation system. See Abyssal Fragments.

The Expeditionersโ€™ Guild also sells supplies marked abyss-only. These can be eaten or placed in the Abyss but do not work outside it. Placed bound supplies retain their identity when broken and cannot be converted into ordinary items.

World rules

  • The Abyss is permanently dark and has its own custom ambience and spawning.
  • Beds cannot be used in the Abyss: they neither skip the night nor set a respawn point there.
  • Clan claims do not protect land in the Abyss. Nothing down here is yours.
  • Creative and spectator players are exempt from abyss sickness.
  • The surfaceโ€™s lack of hostile spawns is intentional; the descent proper is where the population and difficulty curve begin.
  • The Root is deliberately sparse. Its emptiness and scale are the feature, rather than unfinished space to be filled with ordinary structures.
