Rule one: smile. Rule two: never name the first price. Rule three: get it in writing.
I did not follow rule three.
A cautionary tale. A builder - diligent, reasonably handsome - constructs fine quarters for a certain Master of Coin.
Oak beams. Copper gutters. A small singing fountain.
Payment due 'upon completion'.
Completion came four years ago.
The Master of Coin has since described my invoice as 'a strong opening offer'.
This is masterful bartering. I hate it here.
The Village Council once proposed an entire residential district - homes anyone could buy!
It awaits 'the settlement of certain outstanding accounts'.
